First Skiing Adventure!!

Izzy and I were finally able to sneak away for a little skiing fun! It was Izzy's first time skiing - and she loved it! She was such a natural, she picked it up so fast. We had so much fun. I have been waiting to do this since she was born. Skiing is something that I truly love and enjoy - and couldn't wait to share that with my girls! We can't wait till the next time.

Christmas 2011

This Christmas was going to weigh heavy on our hearts, as this was the first holiday away from our families. Tim and I had to stay home this Christmas due to a few factors that were out of our control. We have always spent the time with our families - traveling from my parents house to his parents house. We had come to expect the chaos that surrounded Christmas.

This year really allowed us time to "enjoy" the holiday as just a family of 4. Tim and I have shared many stories of the Christmas traditions we had as children - and how we would like to recreate those traditions with our girls. We cooked, baked, read, sang, danced and laughed! The girls had so much fun decorating cookies and wrapping each others presents. They made Reindeer dust and wrote letters to Santa. And on Christmas morning their faces lit up when they saw that Santa had been to their house! We were able to leisurely unwrap presents in our PJ's, and the girls were able to play with their new toys as long as they wanted.

Even though we dearly missed our families, we had a wonderful weekend - I couldn't have asked for anything more. This truly is a magical time of year!

Slumber Party & Ballet Kind of Weekend

We have been looking forward to this weekend for quite a while. Aunt Mel and Charlie promised to come to Vermillion for the weekend so we could have a sleep over and they could watch Izzy and Sophie's ballet recital. The theme for the weekend was FUN! The kids might have had a little TO much of it though. They watched movies, decorated sugar cookies with Tim, rocked the Xbox Kinect and had ice cream treats at DQ. The girls ballet recital was the cutest 1 minute ever - they were reindeer and danced to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Charlie even had flowers to give to the girls when they were done dancing - it was adorable. We were so lucky that Mel and Charlie were able to join us for the weekend!!

Thankful!!

Thanksgiving happens to be one of my favorite holidays - and not just because the day usually falls on my birthday. I love it because it includes all my favorite things, the best of which is FAMILY!! We spent the day in Iowa with my Grandma, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousin (along with their families). The meal was amazing thanks to my mom and Aunt Deb. The girls played while the adults scoped the black friday ads and watched football.

Pretty Ballerina's

The girls started taking ballet classes this fall - and they LOVE it! I was trying to find some sort of 'extra-curricular' activity that they could do...and ballet seemed to be the only one we could fit in our schedules. They love dancing around the house, so I figured it would be fun for them. I started dancing when I was 4, and continued through high school - who knows, they might learn to love it as much as I did.

D-Days 2011

Last weekend was USD's homecoming, also known as D-Days. We found the perfect spot along Main Street to enjoy the parade. The girls loved the floats, bands, cheerleaders...and most of all, the CANDY!! After the parade, we caught a quick nap then headed to the football game. The Coyotes played the Southern Utah Thunderbirds - with a win of 24-19. Happy Homecoming!!

Harvest Festival

We headed to Sioux Falls last Saturday to spend the day with Uncle Tim, Aunt Mel, Charlie, Max and Lincoln. The day started in Harrisburg at the "Country Apple Orchard." It happened to be the weekend of their Harvest Festival, which meant inflatable castles, pony rides, hay bales and pumpkins. The kids had a wonderful time playing and we couldn't have asked for better weather! After the orchard, we headed to lunch. Tim's Aunt Debbie joined us for the lunch/birthday celebration. We were celebrating 4 different birthdays - Tim H, Tim O and the twins, Max & Lincoln. We headed to Aunt Debbie's for some play time/rest time, then enjoyed a fun frozen yogurt snack before heading home. It was a great day and one that we were all sad to see end.

South Dakota's Komen Race

This morning was the annual "Susan G. Komen for the Cure" race in Vermillion. The girls and I, along with my mom, were part of the Snap. Crackle. Pink! team. We had a great time! This was our first race, and I am sure we will be a part of it next year. The girls loved all the excitement that surrounded the race, from the marching band at the starting line, to the balloon covered finish line. They also enjoyed pointing out other teams attire, which included pink wigs, feather boas, crazy shirts, bandanas, and tutus.

Today we headed to Sioux City for the annual Art Splash, which reminded me of Rapid City's West Boulevard Summer Art Festival. We had to try a few of the food vendors before we headed over to the kid's area. Wow, what a set up! They had about 10 different booths, sponsored by local businesses and schools, that had arts and crafts activities for the kids. The girls started by making butterfly magnets, then moved on to ribbon hair ties and finished with decorating their own hats. Afterward we found a comfy spot on the grass, and enjoyed the entertainment. What a wonderful, much needed, family outing!

Fun at the Farm!

Last Friday the girls and I headed to Old McDonald's Farm with their Granma Linda, Aunt Mel, Aunt Mary and cousins Charlie, Mak, Kyra, Lincoln and Max. The girls never grow tired of going, they love that place. We spent a lot of time playing with the baby animals: goats, cows, and chickens. We wish we were closer to enjoy more opportunities like this with family!

My little fish!

Izzy and Sophia just finished their first session of "big kid" swim lessons, meaning this was the first time they were in the pool without me. I was excited to make the leap from Parent/Child lessons to Preschool lessons, however, I was worried that the girls would be hesitant about being in the water by themselves. Was I ever wrong...they LOVED it and did AWESOME!! They were swimming under water all by themselves. After 2 weeks, they were both swimming with freestyle arm strokes and kicks. It was an emotional moment for this Mama, who has dreamed of passing the love of swimming on to her kids. I think I can safely say that it's "in their blood." I will never push them to be competitive like I was, I just want them to enjoy being in the water.

Someone in Iowa Loves Us!!

After our trip to the zoo, we headed to my Aunt Deb and Uncle Denny's house. The girls couldn't wait to tell everyone about the animals they saw at the zoo. Sunday morning the girls headed up the hill in the back yard to my Uncle's wild flower beds. They wanted to pick ALL the flowers. They were beautiful. We enjoyed visiting, laughing and playing. The girls also loved entertaining their great-grandma with stories of princesses and horses.

Zoo Trip

The girls and I jumped in the car with my parents and took a road trip last weekend to the Omaha Zoo. We heard so many wonderful things about the zoo, and were so excited to check it out. WE LOVED IT!! The girls had so much fun. Special thanks to my mom and dad for making the day so memorable! We can't wait to go back again.

God Bless America!!

Well, we managed to have a 'super fun' 4th of July weekend, however I have not fully recovered and am still a little sleep deprived.

Saturday we took the girls to the pool for some fun in the sun. They have become quite the little swimmers, which I think is from going everyday with daycare. Afterwards we headed to the library to grab new books and movies for the rest of the weekend.

On Sunday we joined Tim's friends and their families for a 4th BBQ and fireworks. The girls enjoyed the wide open spaces of the farm, and loved the play house/sand box that was there too.

Monday night was the local 4th of July celebration in the city park. The girls played on the inflatable slides and toys, tried their first sno-cones and stayed awake long enough to see the fireworks.

Ed Tech + City of Brotherly Love = ISTE 2011

This years International Society for Technology In Education conference was held in Philadelphia, PA. I was lucky enough to attend with my good friend and colleague Pat. We had a wonderful time at the conference and in the beautiful city of Philly. We played tourist and walked A LOT of miles! The conference was amazing, as usual, however this year I was able to take a different approach...I attended sessions on technology in Higher Ed instead of technology in K-12. We met with faculty from across the country who are revising courses, integrating tech tools and developing professional learning opportunities.

My Tennis Star

Last week Izzy started tennis lessons as part of the city's summer recreation program. We really wanted to give Izzy a chance to try something new and to do something sans Sophie. The first lesson was rough, she was very shy and not really sure if she wanted to join the other kids, however, since then she has warmed up to the game and even hit the ball a few times this week. Tim wants to buy a racket to they can go across the street from our house and play tennis together. Who knows...maybe she will learn to love the game as much as her Papa did.

Weekend Fun: Part I

Last weekend my Mom came to our house to spend the long holiday weekend with us! We had the greatest time together. The girls invited her to play dress up, asked her to read LOTS of books and snuggled with her on the couch. We went shopping Sunday and visited the Sertoma Butterfly House on Monday. We were sad to see her leave, but she promised to bring Granpa back with her next time!!

Weekend Fun: Part II

On Saturday we met Tim's parents in Sioux Falls and headed to the Great Plains Zoo. The girls were so excited, as this was their first trip to the zoo. We talked about all the animals they might see, but nothing could prepare them for actually seeing them up close. They loved the monkeys, giraffes and tigers. Tim and I were grateful that the girls were able to spend the afternoon with their grandparents. Izzy had so much to tell Papa, she talked throughout the whole trip.

Celebrating their legacy...

This weekend we joined the Haggar families for the annual celebration of Grandpa Ed and Grandma Arlene. Every year everyone gets together for a balloon release at the cemetery, followed by a traditional family dinner. This was the first year we were able to join in the celebration. We had a wonderful time visiting with Tim's aunts, uncles and cousins; the girls had a wonderful time playing with their cousins. In all there were 38 family members present...wow!

Kites, Bikes, and Swimming...Oh My!

We had a busy, but wonderful weekend. My parents were able to get away from work and make the drive to Vermillion. The girls were so excited to have them here. We spent Friday afternoon flying kites and cleaning up the yard. I love getting my flowers pots out and am looking forward to getting flowers for Mother's Day (its all I asked for). After kites, the girls were surprised with their birthday gifts from Granma and Granpa- BIKES!!! Saturday was spent learning how to ride. My Aunt and Grandma joined us on Sunday. We had a great time visiting...and exchanging May Day baskets (see previous post). The girls also enjoyed swimming Saturday and Sunday evenings at the hotel...good thing G&G stay at the Holiday Inn!

More Celebrating...

We were able to celebrate Easter Sunday together, just the 4 of us. We went to church, then came home to Easter Bunny surprises. It was a relaxing day and the weather was perfect. The girls loved hunting for eggs. We filled our tummies with a huge turkey dinner and then cuddled together for movie night.

Word of the Day: FUN

Aunt Melissa and Charlie met us in Sioux Falls for a day of fun yesterday! We were celebrating Sophie's birthday (a few days early). We started at the Kirby Science Center, then off to lunch and finished with the movie "Rio" at the Century Theaters. The kids had a wonderful time, and Sophie was so excited that she was able to open a few birthday presents.

Saturday morning we got a surprise phone call followed by a knock at the door! My parents made a surprise trip to see us. We were so excited to see them. The weekend consisted of playing, reading books, visiting Grandma-Great, Aunt Deb & Uncle Denny, and SWIMMING!!!! G & G stayed at a hotel with a pool, which the girls LOVED! They went swimming both nights, and didn't want to leave either time. They are just little fish...I wonder who they got that from?

Ski For Light 2011

There is a saying that spreads around the Ski For Light banquet during the final evening of the week, and that is 'there is only one thing that could top this year's SFL event...and that's next year's SFL event.'

It always rings true! This year was AWESOME! I realized that this is my 12th year with Ski For Light...still can't believe its been so long, I'm almost to veteran status. I was finally able to guide again this year, which is the most fulfilling part of the week. For those of you not familiar with this program, we are an organization that promotes outdoor activities for blind/disabled individuals. Our big event every year is a ski program. My "Snow" Angels

Even though my girls haven't been angels the last few weeks, our play time outside reminds me how blessed I am. This was the first time that they made 'snow angels.' I had to show them how to lay in the snow and move their arms and legs. They LOVED it! They probably made about a dozen angels all around our yard. Their little giggles warmed my heart. I can't wait to bring their sleds home with us from Rapid City next week.

Well, I think my children have an addiction, which I have labeled an iAddiction. The definition: a love for playing games on the iPad. Their favorite apps right now include: Wheels on the Bus, Monkey's LunchBox, Starwalk and Highlights Hidden Pictures.

One of the benefits of working in the education field is Christmas break. This year, the girls and I headed back to Rapid for 11 days. Christmas Eve was spent with my family. We went to church, ate the traditional enchilada dinner, and opened presents. We had a great time. The girls were spoiled little princesses. We are so blessed.

Celebrating with the Haggar's!

We are so lucky to have both families in the same town, it sure saves on more travel. Tim's family was all together this year for Christmas. We spent our nights over at Aunt Mary's and Uncle Chris's house. The kids played, played and played...Mak's toys seemed so cool. Plus we found out that Sophie is a Wii Dance master!! She ruled at that game.

We gathered at Tim's parent's house on Christmas day, which included an Ugly Sweater contest, opening presents, and a wonderful lunch. The next day was a 'girls day out.' I joined Melissa, Mary, Christina and Linda for some retail therapy and lunch. We had a great time, and great conversations. Can't wait for our girls weekend in March!

Storybook Tradition

Wet and Wild Fun @ Watiki!

During our Christmas vacation week in Rapid, Granma Pat decided we needed a 'girls only' swimming day. So the four of us headed to Watiki indoor water park. The girls love tubing down the river and playing in the fountains. We convinced both girls to go down the BIG slide. Wow, was that an experience...we went flying. Sophie laughed the whole way, while Izzy was a little terrified. They were so exhausted after playing, they took loooong naps and slept really good that night.

Lots of snow in Vermillion!

Yesterday we sat in the house and watched the blizzard going on outside. There were points we couldn't even see across the street. The the highways and interstates around us were closed, with no travel advised within city limits. The girls and I played, sang Christmas songs and watched Christmas movies.

But one day of being snowed in is all we can take. We broke free this morning, with layers of clothing on. The drifts in front of our house were as tall as they were. They loved jumping in the snow and throwing snowballs at the dog.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

For my birthday every year, Tim has kept to tradition by allowing me to decorate for Christmas. I know it is a little early, however, I LOVE Christmas. Every year is more enjoyable than the last. The girls were so excited to decorate their little pink tree. They have the cutest ornaments: a mish-mash of hand me downs, puppies and santas.

Halloween Fun!

We were able to spend the weekend in Minnesota with Aunt Mel, Uncle Tim, Charlie, Max and Lincoln. On Saturday we headed to the Mall of America with the kiddos for some fun. They enjoyed the rides and a few arcade games. We had lunch at the Rain Forest Cafe, which was quite an experience. That afternoon everyone wore their costumes to the local mall to surprise Aunt Tina. We had a great time, and are looking forward to our next trip.

Pumpkin Time

It was finally time to carve pumpkins. The girls have been waiting so patiently for this day. Granma Pat brought pumpkins from (great) Uncle Denny's garden a few weeks ago which were the perfect size. Izzy picked out a bat design, while Sophia stuck with a funny face. The best part was the look on their faces when they put their hands in to get the seeds out...ewww, gooey!!!

Birthday Celebrations in Style!

Last weekend we headed to the Terry Peak Chalets, outside of Deadwood, for my father-in-laws 60th birthday! Everyone in Tim's family was able to join us at the cabins. It was so beautiful! The cabins were amazing. Thursday night was Tim O's birthday and Friday was Tim's birthday. Saturday we celebrated Tim Sr's birthday. It was great spending time with everyone!!

Wanted: D.A.D.D.Y.

The girls have been real troopers since we moved. I took them away from the only things they knew and didn't even have Tim here help in the transition. They are very much Daddy's Girls, so the hardest part for them is not having him here with us. They have become more comfortable with our creative means of communication: virtual picnics with daddy on the living room carpet and online bedtime stories. Even though there have been some rough days, I am very proud of my BIG girls...they are my strength!

Party Time!

Will 3rd week pics work?

We are into our third week in Vermillion...and are slowly getting adjusted. I had planned to take pictures of Izzy's first day of Preschool, however, it just happened to be our first of Daycare too! You can only imagine how the first day was...some crying, kicking, screaming, ect. So, as much as I wanted the cute pic, I had to wait until they were more adjusted.

Today was a GREAT day. Izzy was the preschool snack person, and had show-and-tell. Sophie was excited to see her little friends. I was FINALLY able to get pics of my little school girls. Sophie was jealous that Izzy got a backpack, so we had to find one from the playroom for her.

The Super-Sleuths are on the Case!

I have had to get very creative for evening entertainment. Once the girls are home from day care, they immediately start asking for daddy. I have had to come up with fun activities to keep them busy; keeping their minds off of missing daddy. One of their favorite activities is looking for bugs with their magnifying glasses. First Homework Assignment

Awww...it was a proud mommy moment when Izzy brought home her first homework assignment from Preschool. We sat at the kitchen table together, while Sophie watched Yo Gabba Gabba. Izzy told me what to draw in the boxes, and even added some of the color! I can't believe she is going to Preschool already...where has the time gone?? Everyday is something new, and I am so amazed by her curiosity and imagination. I am so blessed to have such smart, wonderful little girls!

Who would have thought....

In one weeks time, I resigned from my teaching position, signed a new contract and moved my family all the way across the state of South Dakota...to start my job at the University of South Dakota!!! This is all still very surreal; I just can't believe we are actually here. I can't THANK my parents enough for helping the girls and I get here and get settled. I don't know what I would have done without them!!!!

I was offered a position in the School of Education as a Technology Instructor/Integrationist. I will be working with the School of Ed faculty in integrating technology into their courses, and I will also be teaching two sections of TET 200, which is a sophomore level course on how to use technology in education. The first week has been wonderful, and I truly enjoy working with the other technology instructors.

Tim is still in Rapid getting the house ready to put on the market...and once he feels everything is set to sell, he will join us in Vermillion.

Anything for them...

When the girls woke up from their naps today, they came out to the living room to see a little surprise. I made new blankets and pillows for their baby dolls. They picked out the fabric...Izzy chose "The Little Mermaid" and Sophia chose "Minnie Mouse." I figured it was time to do something since, lately, they have started using my dish towels from the kitchen as make-shift baby blankets. The girls loved them! I know they will get used, especially this week...as we have officially started our week long hibernation. It's rally week here in the hills...to many motorcycles out on the roads.

Shhhhh...I even made a blanket and pillow for their cousin Kyra's baby dolls too!

WANTED: Aunt Tina!!

The girls were SO excited when Aunt Tina knocked on the door the other night. She made a surprise visit to see the girls. Our Newest Addition...

We finally got a puppy for the girls! They have been asking for some time...all their cousins have dogs, and they love playing with Granma Linda's dogs. So, the time was right. We found this adorable corgi pup, and decided to let the girls name her. Izzy settled on "Molly" and...oh, golly miss molly, I hope she is ready for these girls. The first night home, the girls wore her out and she slept the whole night with no whinning.

The Irish Twins Strike Again!

I'm making a prediction that these two weeks of time will haunt me every year. It feels like "Toddlers Gone Wild" at our house right now...and this just happens to be the 2 weeks that the girls are both 2 years old. Sophie turned 2 last week and Izzy turns 3 this coming Thursday. So as the nice old ladies tell me in the grocery store "you know they call them Irish Twins" (in reference to only 11 months between their births). By the end of these two weeks, Tim and I might have to do as the Irish do...and have a pint, or two.

Last weekend, Tim and I took the girls to the Kids Fair. They had SO much fun!! They were a little more adventurous than last year. It was so much fun to watch their curiosity. Easter Celebration

We started the weekend with egg dying and ended the weekend with hunting for eggs. This was the first Easter that the girls were excited and very aware of what Easter was all about. GO RUSH!!!

Well, I'm finally posting pics from the father/daughter hockey game. As you all know, Tim and Izzy are HUGE hockey fans. Izzy can spot a hockey logo from a mile away, whether its the Colorado Avs or the Rapid City Rush. The Rush made it to the playoffs and we promised Izzy that she could go watch a game. They had so much fun! The only bad thing was my camera battery died...so Tim couldn't get any more pics (which made me VERY sad).

When they got home from the game, I asked Izzy about the game:

Mom: Izzy, did you have fun?
Iz: Yeah, mom, it was so COOL!

Warm Weather Tease

Last weekend we were able to enjoy the warm weather outside. Last summer, the city started building a new park, however, it wasn't finished in time to go play before school started. So we were finally able to go see it. The girls had a blast! The toddler area is perfect for them...they get a little independence while rooming around. I know we'll be back to this park soon!!

Who's Birthday?

A few weeks ago, the girls and I joined my mom and headed to Borders Bookstore to celebrate Elmo's birthday. The store had a party, which included Elmo birthday cards, hot chocolate treats, read alouds and games. The girls were a little shy at first, but warmed up to the other kids. Their favorite part was coloring the cards for Elmo.

On Tuesday, we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday. The girls and I found all the Dr.Seuss books in the house and had a miny read-a-thon. Daddy even joined in the fun. Izzy kept asking if we were going to have a cake for Dr. Seuss...I guess I know what her priorities are. ;-)

Keepin' Him Busy

Granma Linda made a trip to Minnesota a few weeks ago to help out Aunt Mel (read this blog) however, Papa stayed home to hold the fort down. We have been trying to keep Papa busy since Granma left...we know how sad he was to be away from Charlie, Max and Lincoln. So the girls entertainment consisted of reading, laughing, tickling, reading, painting, eating and...did I mention reading. Tim and I were even lucky enough to invite his dad and my dad out for a Rush hockey game. We had terrific seats in the Budwiser sky box. We hope he had a great time, I know the girls sure enjoyed every minute.

We "LOVE" this day!!!

We had fun celebrating v-day! The girls enjoyed their party at daycare on Friday, which included passing out valentine's to their friends, playing games and 'overdosing' on sugar treats! On Saturday we cooked a heart shaped pizza and then made heart shaped cookies. And during all the fun, Tim and I were able to share LOTS of hugs and kisses with the girls...which is what valentine's day is all about!

This was a CRAZY week! I know I've said that before about SFL, but this week was in fact CRAZY!! Let me put the week in order:

2. Sunday- during the Wine and Cheese party, Tim texts me about Izzy getting sick (poor thing).

3. Monday AM- Tim stays home with Izzy, I get to Deadwood for guide/participant pairing and equipment checkout. Tim takes Izzy to Dr.

4. Monday PM- Dr. recommends Izzy be admitted to the hospital for dehydration...still not sure what's causing her pain.

5. Monday night to Wednesday morning (almost 48 hours)- in hospital with Izzy...probably the worst 2 days of my life...you feel SO helpless when you can't do anything for your own child! Finally get to head home Wednesday after lunch...turns out she had some rare bacteria in her kidneys, causing a horrible bladder infection. STRONG antibiotics seemed to help after kicking in.

6. Thursday- I head back up to Deadwood...trying to finish out the week. Izzy wanted to return to daycare to "see her friends."

7. Friday- Ski For Light Race day and awards banquet

Like I said...it was a CRAZY week!!

Last weekend our family headed to Minnesota for the twins' baptism. Tim and I were honored to be named as Maxwell's godparents. We wish we could have spent more time playing and cuddling...but were definitely thankful for every minute we had.
